कोविड-19 महामारी (COVID19 pandemic) के बीच एक राहत भरी खबर है। इंग्लैंड के शोधकर्ताओं ने दावा किया है कि, सस्ती और हर जगह मिलने वाली दवा डेक्सामेथासोन कोरोना वायरस से संक्रमित गंभीर रूप से बीमार मरीज़ों की जान बचाने में मददगार साबित हो सकती है। उनका दावा है कि डेक्सामेथासोन नामक स्टेराइड के इस्तेमाल से गंभीर रूप से बीमार मरीजों की मृत्यु दर एक तिहाई तक घट गयी. मंगलवार को नतीजों की घोषणा की गयी और जल्द ही अध्ययन को प्रकाशित किया जाएगा। विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (डब्ल्यूएचओ) ने भी इस ख़बर की पुष्टी की है , और यूनाइटेड किंगडम के शोधकर्ताओं, डाक्टरों ,अस्पतालों और मरीजों का इस शोध के लिए अभिनंदन किया है। डब्ल्यूएचओ ने कहा कि शोधकर्ताओं ने डेक्सामेथासोन के क्लीनिकल परीक्षण के प्रारंभिक परिणामों को साझा किया है और संगठन आने वाले दिनों में इस पर विस्तृत रूप से विश्लेषण की उम्मीद करता है।
रिसर्चर्स की स्टडी के अनुसार, सख्ती से जांच करने और औचक तौर पर 2104 मरीजों को दवा दी गयी और उनकी तुलना 4321 मरीजों से की गयी, जिनकी साधारण तरीके से देखभाल हो रही थी, उन्हें यह दवा नहीं दी गई थी। दवा के इस्तेमाल के बाद श्वसन संबंधी मशीनों (वेंटिलेटर)
के साथ उपचार करा रहे मरीजों की मृत्यु दर 35 प्रतिशत तक घट गयी। जिन लोगों को ऑक्सीजन की सहायता दी जा रही थी, उनमें भी मृत्यु दर 20 फीसदी कम हो गयी। ब्रिटेन के विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि कम मात्रा में इस दवा का उपयोग कोरोना के ख़िलाफ़ लड़ाई में एक बड़ी कामयाबी की तरह सामने आया है।
डेक्सामेथासोन 1960 के दशक से गठिया और अस्थमा के इलाज में इस्तेमाल होने वाली दवा है। कोरोना के जिन मरीज़ों को वेंटिलेटर की जरूरत पड़ रही है, उनमें से आधे नहीं बच पा रहे हैं इसलिए इस जोखिम को एक तिहाई तक कम कर देना वाक़ई में काफ़ी बड़ी कामयाबी है।
शोधकर्ताओं का अनुमान है कि अगर इस दवा का इस्तेमाल ब्रिटेन में संक्रमण के शुरुआती दौर से ही किया जाता तो क़रीब पाँच हज़ार लोगों की जान बचाई जा सकती थी। चूंकि यह दवा बहुत ही सस्ती है, इसलिए ग़रीब देशों के लिए भी काफ़ी फ़ायदेमंद साबित हो सकती है।
कोरोना के क़रीब 100 मरीज़ों में से 95 मरीज़ बिना अस्पताल में भर्ती हुए ही ठीक हो रहे हैं। जो मरीज़ अस्पताल में भर्ती हो रहे हैं, उनमें से भी ज्यादातर ठीक हो रहे हैं। फिर भी कुछ ऐसे मरीज़ हैं जिन्हें ऑक्सीजन या फिर वेंटिलेटर की ज़रूरत पड़ रही है। यह दवा ऐसे ही अधिक गंभीर रुप से बीमार रहने वाले मरीज़ों को मदद पहुँचाती है।
इस दवा का इस्तेमाल पहले से ही सूजन को कम करने में किया जाता रहा है और अब ऐसा लगता है कि यह कोरोना वायरस से लड़ने में हमारे शरीर के प्रतिरक्षा प्रणाली को मदद पहुँचाने वाली है। जब शरीर की प्रतिरक्षा प्रणाली अधिक सक्रियता के साथ प्रतिक्रिया करती है तब वैसे हालात को साइटोकिन स्टॉर्म कहा जाता है, यह जानलेवा भी हो सकता है।
इस दल के मुख्य अध्ययनकर्ता प्रोफ़ेसर पीटर हॉर्बी ने कहा, "यह एकमात्र ऐसी दवा है अब तक जिसके असर से मृत्यु दर में कमी देखी गई है और यह कमी इतनी है जो कि काफ़ी अहम मात्रा में है। यह एक बड़ी कामयाबी है."
एक अन्य शोधकर्ता प्रोफ़ेसर मार्टिन लैंड्रे का कहना है कि इस दवा की मदद से आप वेंटिलेटर के सहारे जीवित हर आठ में से एक की ज़िंदगी बचा सकते हैं. और जिन मरीज़ों को ऑक्सीजन की ज़रूरत पड़ रही है, उनमें से क़रीब हर 20-25 मरीजों पर आप एक मरीज़ बचा सकते हैं.
वो कहते हैं, "यह साफ़ तौर पर मदद पहुँचाने वाली दवा है. डेक्सामेथासोन के दस दिन के इलाज का ख़र्च एक मरीज़ पर क़रीब मात्र पाँच सौ रूपया पड़ता है. इसलिए क़रीब महज़ साढ़े तीन हज़ार रुपये में एक मरीज़ की जान बचाई जा सकती है और यह दवा हर जगह मिलती है। "
हालांकि कोरोना के जिन मरीज़ों में हल्के लक्षण हैं, उनको यह दवा कोई मदद नहीं पहुँचा पाती है.
इसलिए प्रोफ़ेसर लैंड्रे कहते है कि जब ज़रूरत पड़े तो अस्पताल में भर्ती मरीज़ों को ही यह दवा देनी चाहिए और लोगों को यह दवा बाज़ार से ख़रीद कर अपने घरों पर रखने की ज़रूरत नहीं है।
जिन दवाओं पर ट्रायल चल रहा है उनमें मलेरिया की दवा हाइड्रोक्सीक्लोरोक्वीन भी एक थी लेकिन इसकी वजह से हृदय संबंधी समस्या बढ़ने और जान जाने का ख़तरा बना रहता है।
भारत कोरोना वैक्सीन के लिए विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (WHO) के साथ साझा ट्रायल का हिस्सा है।
इंडियन काउंसिल ऑफ मेडिकल रिसर्च (ICMR) के डॉक्टर रमण गंगाखेडकर ने पहले कहा था कि भारत ने रेमडेसिवीर के ट्रायल पर नजर बना रखी है और उससे जुड़ा डाटा इकट्ठा किया जा रहा है। यदि यह दवा कारगर होती है तो बड़ी कामयाबी होगी। भारत की आबादी को देखते हुए इसकी कीमत और उपलब्धता पर भी नजर रखी जा रही है। ऐसे में रेमडेसिवीर दवा कोरोना मरीजों के लिए फायदेमंद होने की बात विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन ने कही है।
